African Friends and Money Matters: Observations from Africa (Publications in Ethnography, Vol. 37)
David E. Maranz
SIL International
, 2001
Outstanding Book
As a missionary in Africa, I have found this book to be one of the most detailed, insightful and practical books on interactions between Westerners and Africans on many levels- not just financial ones. It gives very specific examples on a variety of areas of tension ...
Sea of Glory: America's Voyage of Discovery, the U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842
Nathaniel Philbrick
, 2003
Government Science! Read Carefully, Congress!
A little crankish determination, a little sordid bickering, a heroic cruise on a sailing ship to the ends of the Earth, betrayal and exoneration - all elements of a great adventure book, written with verve and yet with careful scholarship. I'm amazed that so many other ...

National Geographic
, 2008
As cultures and languages disappear from the Earth at a shocking rate, it becomes all the more urgent for us to know and value the world?s many ethnic identities. National Geographic?s Book of Peoples of the World propels that important quest with concern, authority, and respect. Created by a team of experts, this hands-on resource offers ...
Natural Fashion: Tribal Decoration from Africa
Hans Silvester
Thames & Hudson
, 2008
Beauty does not need a context
I do not (yet) own this book, but I spent half an hour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art gift shop recently in an absolute trance paging through it. The sole review here trashing this beautiful book struck me as so unfair that I feel compelled to write a rebuttal. ...
Guests of the Sheik: An Ethnography of an Iraqi Village
Elizabeth Warnock Fernea
Anchor
, 1995
Guests of the Sheik
This is a great book. I bought it to replace a tattered copy a had bought at a book sale, and read it again. I enjoyed it just as much the second time. Ms. Fernea is a very sensitive author. Her other books are also excellent.
On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection
Susan Stewart
Duke University Press
, 1993
a great book for artists
On Longing is sensitively written and a must read for anyone interested in art or literature especially artists and writers. I would recommend Italo Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millenium to anyone who enjoyed On Longing.
Cop in the Hood: My Year Policing Baltimore's Eastern District
Peter Moskos
Princeton University Press
, 2008
Cop in the Hood is Gold!
This book is amazing. It takes you into the real life of becoming a polie officer through the academy to life on the streets. Peter Moskos does an excellent job in telling the truth of the life of a police officer. For anyone interesting in becoming a police officer or ...

Worlds Before Our Own by Brad Steiger
The mounting scientific and paleontological evidence towards an alternative to the current world view, that man evolved from apes during the last three to five million years, is skillfully and relentlessly presented by Brad Steiger in this landmark book. It is now ...
Why Is Sex Fun?: The Evolution Of Human Sexuality (Science Masters)
Jared Diamond
Basic Books
, 1998
The evolution of human sex
The evolutionist Richard Dawkins once said that he would have written a book on the evolution of sex if Jared Diamond hadn't had done such a good job of it with `Why is Sex fun?' If you are interested in evolution or the evolution of human sexuality then this ...

Provides basics for designing products for web software and competitive advantage alike
SUBJECT TO CHANGE: CREATING GREAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR AN UNCERTAIN WORLD provides basics for designing products for web software and competitive advantage alike - but to limit it to computer collections would be a shame. It's the college-level or public library ...
The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815 (Studies in North ...
Richard White
Cambridge University Press
, 1991
Breaking new ground
Richard White should be awfully proud of himself. Using a close examination of a particular time in a particular place, he manages to open one's eyes to an entirely new way of thinking about the long term dynamics of human interaction that we call "history". Works like ...
Neoliberalism as Exception: Mutations in Citizenship and Sovereignty
Aihwa Ong
Duke University Press
, 2006
Neoliberalism is commonly viewed as an economic doctrine that seeks to limit the scope of government. Some consider it a form of predatory capitalism with adverse effects on the Global South. In this groundbreaking work, Aihwa Ong offers an alternative view of neoliberalism as an extraordinarily malleable technology of governing that is taken up ...
Essentials of Physical Anthropology (with InfoTrac )
Robert Jurmain
,
Lynn Kilgore
, ...
Wadsworth Publishing
, 2005
This mainstream, four-color physical anthropology text is the best selling text in the brief physical anthropology market. The text presents a balanced, thorough introduction to the field of physical anthropology that also reflects the current state of the field. The heredity and evolution chapters (Chapters 1-5) have been expanded and updated to ...
Friction: An Ethnography of Global Connection
Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing
Princeton University Press
, 2004
Beautiful, eye-opening, public-minded anthropology
I was surprised to see no review of this book, so I had to write one. It has many interesting facets, but at its core is a vivid and sometimes heart-breaking portrayal of the true face of "globalization" - not the shining abstraction of Thomas Friedman's dreams but a ...
The Racial Contract
Charles W. Mills
Cornell University Press
, 1999
Not Deconstruction but Still a Tour de Force
"White supremacy is the unnamed political system that has made the modern world what it is today." So begins The Racial Contract, and in the mere 133 pages that follow this line the book deftly marshals evidence from the Western political tradition and general history ...
