Not really a great read
I found this work to be a little disappointing. Each story seemed to develope slowly and was just not exiciting or interesting. Maybe to someone just beginning to read about this war, it might hold some interest, but not in my case.

This was really good. It's about various women that helped shape the Civil War, whether by being Spies, Soldiers, Journalists, Angels of Mercy, or whatever. You'll be surprised how far some of these women went for their cause, and how much they accomplished in that ...

A mixture of good, dubious, wrong, and "so what?"
Do you know where the phrase "Achilles' heel" came from? If you're at least past fourth grade in the U.S., you sure do. Hey, do you know where the word "apocalyptic" came from? Guess what, it's from the Greek! The book is filled with words and figures of speech we ...

Excellant Compilation
Mr. Webb's compilation of the photographs of Matthew Brady is a fine edition to any Civil War library. The only limitation is one of expectations. In Brady's age the technology of photography was limited when compared to todays standards. The lack of fast film, or ...

Although the title implies that this might be a collection of short stories, it is more a series of chapters describing historical events. Written in a journalistic style that would hold your interest in a magazine, this book is not fiction but history that is slightly ...
Civil War Hostages: Hostage Taking in the Civil War

Interesting take on the Civil War
Every so often a book is published that covers an aspect of the Civil War that is not usually discussed in other works. Such a book is this one, by a well-respected Civil War writer. I must confess that I knew absolutely nothing about hostage-taking during that war, ...
