Debating the Death Penalty: Should America Have Capital Punishment? The Experts on Both Sides Make Their Case
Oxford University Press, USA
, 2005
Death Penalty Opinions
I believe that the opinions in this book are very enlightening. The co. authors explain their opinions very well and present their views cogently. Paul Cassell's chapter in this book was very convincing and it is very clear to note that he is oneof the leading experts ...
Thinking and Writing about Philosophy

Bedford/St. Martin's
, 2002
Great book!
This is a great book. Required for my class. You can probably find this book a few bucks cheaper. I rather pay the extra dough and save on time and hassle wasted like waiting in line during the beginning days of school or waiting for the auction to end or hoping the ...
The Death Penalty in America: Current Controversies (Oxford paperbacks)
Oxford University Press, USA
, 1998
Well-researched
It is true that overall Bedau presents an argument in opposition to capital punishment. However, this argument is very well researched and documented. One may disagree with the conclusion, but it would be difficult to refute the evidence presented in the book. ...
In Spite Of Innocence: Erroneous Convictions in Capital Cases

A new look at the criminal justice system.
In our system of justice the worst case scenario is to be convicted of capitol crime and sentenced to death. Even worse than that is that fact you are innocent of the crime. This book exposes some serious miscarriages of the system. The authors, in great detail ...
Current Issues and Enduring Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking and Argument, with Readings
Sylvan Barnet
, Hugo Bedau
Bedford/St. Martin's
, 2007
Good intro text; watch out for edition number
Good intro to the principles of critical thinking. It was a little weird for me to have this book assigned in grad school; I remember it from my daughter's college freshman year. New editions keep the readings current, but that means you have to pay attention to the ...

Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing: A Brief Guide to Argument
Sylvan Barnet
, Hugo Bedau
Bedford/St. Martin's

Excellent Book
Great book that gives very good advice for thinking critically while reading and writing. A big portion of the book is reprints of articles used as examples, but these reprints are good to read as exercises.
Civil Disobedience in Focus (Philosophers in Focus)
Hugo Bedau
Routledge
, 1991
Although the issue of civil disobedience has been discussed as early as 399 B.C., this topic continues to be at the center of much recent debate in the wake of events such as Tiananmen Square and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Civil Disobedience in Focus assembles all the basic materials, both classic and contemporary, ...

A great introduction into some very important topics
I read this book with an open mind, ready for anything. I was happily surprised to find that for a book with such political implications the authors remained true to their goal: discovery of the truth. No matter whether you agree with them or not, this book is a ...
Contemporary and Classic Arguments: A Portable Anthology
Sylvan Barnet
, Hugo Bedau
Bedford/St. Martin's
, 2004
Wonderful anthology of modern arguments and those from history
This book is, as it says, a two-part anthology of written argument. Most probably, the book can serve as a resource for political/social science/literature classes at the college level. Part One contains contemporary arguments, providing at least one pro and one ...

Killing as Punishment: Reflections on the Death Penalty in America
Hugo Adam Bedau

Hugo Adam Bedau has commanded a long and distinguished career as one of the most widely respected opponents of capital punishment. His work has addressed a variety of perspectives in the death penalty debate, from execution of the innocent to the philosophical and moral grounds for abolition. Now his essays from the last fifteen years appear ...
Making Mortal Choices: Three Exercises in Moral Casuistry
Hugo Adam Bedau
Oxford University Press, USA
, 1997
The answer, to crew and passengers aboard the sinking lifeboat, must have seemed both grimly obvious and unthinkably alien. To save the lives of many, the lives of some would have to be sacrificed. With seawater crashing over the gunwhales, only a lightening of the human cargo would keep the craft afloat. In a procedure that took much of the ...
